-
Do you offer a sailing only experience in Greece?
-

-
What is the best way to get to the trip start location?
-
Fly into Athens International Airport (ATH) which is a mere 28 miles from the marina. Most, if not all, major airlines have regular flights to Athens from all over the world. There are pre-paid and metered taxi stands at the airport and a taxi ride to the marina should cost around $50-$55 depending on traffic. Bearing True South works with registered taxi drivers and can arrange airport transfers for you if desired. If you plan to stay a few days in Athens before or after your trip, let Bearing True South know and they will recommend hotels, sightseeing guided tours, and the best of Athenian cuisine.
-
What are the accommodations like?
-
Bearing True South operates a fleet of five sailing yachts, each with three or four double cabins, a large sundeck, and a comfortable indoor galley for meals and relaxing. They are equipped with an extra inflatable boat (dinghy) and a boat ladder to facilitate swimming and snorkeling activities. On all trips, accommodations are in double occupancy cabins.
On this trip, you'll be traveling on either a Beneteau Oceanis 46-foot sailboat built in 2011 or a Bavaria 45 sailboat built in 2012. They can very comfortably accommodate up to six guests in three double cabins, plus a skipper and a guide in separate quarters. The Oceanis 46 has two bathrooms/showers while the Bavaria 45 has three bathrooms/showers. Both are exceptionally catered for by Bearing True South and boast large sundecks, solar panels, and very spacious kitchen/dining room/living room areas under a massive deck that is fitted with two large couches, a separate sitting area for the skipper and guide, as well as a ton of space for sunbathing in the front.
In Arcadia and Nafplio you'll be staying in boutique 3-star hotels in a twin or double room (double occupancy).
-
Are meals included? What is the food like?
-
This trip includes all breakfasts. While sailing, there is a fully equipped kitchen for you to prepare meals. Breakfast on the sailboat usually consists of bacon and eggs, seasonal fruit, coffee and tea, local bread, peanut butter, and local jam. In Arcadia and Napfplio breakfast is also included in the hotel and it focuses on the regional cuisine of the Peloponnese, using local ingredients. This includes local varieties of different cheeses and cured meats, free range eggs, local jam and butter, freshly baked bread, coffee and tea, etc.
Lunches and dinners are not included on this trip. When a meal is not included feel free to ask the tour leader to suggest a local restaurant in the village or town you are staying in. The places recommended are local eateries and the guides are constantly evaluating and checking to ensure good quality. If you are vegan or vegetarian, or if you have any food allergies or any special requests when it comes to food, please let Bearing True South know at the time of booking so they can make arrangements when shopping for supplies.
Your guide will be shopping for supplies a day before the trip begins. If there are any specific food items you would like your guide to buy and have waiting for you on the boat, send a list to customer service at Bearing True South and they will do the shopping for you. You can pay cash for your items upon arrival as per the supermarket receipt and there's no additional charge for that service.

How much extra money should people budget?
-
Greece is pretty inexpensive compared to most European countries and North America. Plan an extra $40-$60 a day for personal expenses, alcoholic drinks, and a tavern meal. On some of the popular islands, meals tend to be on the expensive side if you opt for fine dining in Michelin star establishments, but a traditional gyro or souvlaki meal should not cost more than $5-$10.
-
What should people bring? Do you have a packing list?
-
Packing as light as possible is always important on an adventure tour and keep in mind that space is limited on board a sailing boat. Travelers are expected to bring with them a backpack or suitcase as well as a daypack for personal items and valuables. A full packing list can be provided upon request.
-
Is there communication with the guests before departure?
-
Bearing True South will arrange three different video chats with all guests, between the time of booking and the time of arrival. The first one is shortly after the time of booking and it is an introductory call, where they get to know you a bit better, answer your initial questions and present you with the different sights you’ll be visiting. The second one is to give you access to the online packing lists, the interactive sightseeing maps and help with trip extensions, extra activities, and transportation options. The third call is about a month before the trip and it’s made to ensure that you’ll be arriving well prepared. You'll be asked to fill out supply lists of personal snacks on board, and provided with directions to the meeting point via an interactive map, as well as your guide’s contact information and so on. After the trip ends (usually within two weeks) they will follow up with all guests and request feedback.
-
Is there extra support provided to guests upon booking?
-
Upon booking, all guests receive an initial “thank you for booking email” containing an introduction to the trip, insight into the destination, and an FAQ. Furthermore, the following services are provided free of charge:
- Access to online suggested packing lists (interactive - varied, dependent on the time of year)
- Access to interactive sightseeing maps for Athens
- Supermarket/alcohol supply shopping list prior to departure
- Daily support via email/WhatsApp, FaceTime or Facebook Messenger shortly before and during the trip
- Advice on booking hotels or extra transportation
- Organizing trip extensions to other parts of Greece
-
Are there additional activities available for purchase?
-
Some optional add-ons include:
- SUP or paddleboard rental
- Private archaeological tour of Athens by a professional archaeologist
- Private cultural and culinary walking tours of Athens
- Single or multi-day trip extensions to other parts of Greece
Should you plan to arrive in Athens a few days prior to your trip, Bearing True South can give you access to an interactive google map containing all the major historical sites in central Athens that they have created for their guests. You can download this on your phone, it’s free, super easy to use, and it’s filled with personal notes that will help you explore the sights in Athens on your own, at your own pace, and ensure you don’t miss anything major.
If you prefer to have a guided sightseeing tour in Athens, let your guides know and Eva, resident archaeologist extraordinaire, will be happy to give you and your guests a private half/full day tour including a visit to the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Archaeological Museum. Eva is an enthusiastic, very knowledgeable professional guide and she has been showing guests around Athens to raving reviews. Her schedule fills up fast during the summer months, so let Bearing True South know a bit in advance if you require her services.
If you plan to spend additional days in Athens, Bearing True South can help recommend hotels, restaurants and the like to make your stay easier. They don’t take commissions or freebies from any such establishments. Your guides just recommend places that they like to stay/eat themselves with their friends and family when they visit Greece.

Do you require or recommend travel insurance?
-
Travel insurance is required for this adventure. We recommend VisitorsCoverage as a provider.
-
Are there special requirements for entry into the destination I am visiting?
-
We recommend you visit the local government websites where you plan to travel and review the required documentation for entry, current restrictions, and general recommendations for travel within the area. We encourage you to also visit your home country's embassy website if you are traveling to a foreign country. Requirements can change rapidly. Please be sure you stay abreast of the requirements and restrictions for anywhere you plan to visit.
