How do I redeem my voucher? For which dates is it valid?

To redeem your voucher, simply reach out to the operator as instructed in your confirmation email, and be sure to provide your order number. Voucher valid only for travel dates that fall within start and end dates shown above. Generally, trips depart a couple of times per month on Saturday during the voucher period. There is a two-person minimum per departure date. Please wait until you receive confirmation from Adventure Journeys before making any travel arrangements.

Adventure Journeys requires a minimum of two people per date in order to guarantee group departures.

What is the best way to get to the trip start location?

American Airlines, Delta, United, and Copa, among others, serve Quito, Ecuador (UIO). Most flights will route you through either Miami, Houston, or Atlanta.

What are the accommodations like?

Accommodations for this trip include a first class hotel in Quito, 4-star hotel in Baños, homestay in the Amazon, 5-star Spa Resort in Papallacta, and a Colonial Hacienda in Imbabura. All prices are based on double occupancy.

Can solo travelers get their own room? Is there a single supplement fee?

If you are traveling solo, you'll be matched with another participant of the same gender. If you prefer to have a single room, you can pay the single supplement fee of $415 directly to Adventure Journeys upon booking.

What is the food like?
-
On your trip you'll have the opportunity to experience and taste local food and snacks. Your guide will help you identify typical food and suggest the best places to enjoy it. Some meals are not included in order to give you some flexibility about where, what, and with whom to eat. You have the option to share these meals with the group, however there is no obligation to do this.
If you have any allergies or food restrictions, please inform Adventure Journeys prior to your departure. Vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free diets are very welcome on the trip, and the guides are always ready to coordinate with chefs and restaurants for substitute meals, as Ecuador is well known for its great diversity of gastronomy.

How much extra money should I budget?

The trip price covers most of your costs. However, you should allot at least $120 for meals not included in the itinerary (roughly $12 per meal), as well as additional money for tips, alcohol, souvenirs, or other personal expenses.

How many people are in each group?

Group sizes are kept small and there is a maximum of 15 people in each group.

What is the hiking portion of the trip like?

This adventure has a moderate level of hiking and is at high elevation. Make sure you drink a lot of water or coca tea. The trail is on dirt surrounded by bushes and grass.
Hiking Time - 3 hours
Hiking Distance - 4 miles
Elevation Gain - 1,200 feet
Minimum Elevation - 12,700 feet
Maximum Elevation - 13,850 feet
NOTE: If the weather and physical conditions are good, you may trek to the Cotopaxi Basecamp in which case the maximum elevation would be 16,000 feet.

What is the biking portion of the trip like?

This adventure has a moderate level of biking. It is mostly downhill, with the first 45 minutes being uphill, followed by a lot of downhill. You'll be riding on cobblestone and dirt roads for the first two hours and one hour on asphalt.

Elevation Gain - 500 feet
Minimum Elevation while Biking - 5,500 feet
Maximum Elevation while Biking - 10,450 feet
NOTE: Although some experience will help you to enjoy the trip more, it’s not required. Your guide will make an extra effort to take care of you, and you’ll just have to slow down and be more cautious on some sections of the trail. If you want to avoid the uphills, there will always be a support car and the driver will be happy to give you a ride until you decide to rejoin the biking group.

What is the rafting like?
-
This adventure has a moderate level of rafting and is considered a Class III river for whitewater rafting. There are some awesome waves and plenty of flat water to go swimming. In addition, the river is surrounded by amazing views of the Amazon landscape. You’ll get a safety briefing before jumping into the raft and the Jatunyacu River is great for both beginners and experts. The Jatunyacu’s Class II and III rapids are safe and fun. They are considered some of the best in Ecuador, as well as one of the best rivers to learn on in South America. Depending on the group size, there will be safety kayakers in addition to the raft guide.
Rafting Time - 4 hours. Depending on the water level it can be shorter.

What is the canyoning portion of the trip like?

This adventure has a moderate level of canyoning. The jungle exploration will be done while hiking in a canyon that has been formed by the waterfalls and the river Pimpilala. You'll be hiking on irregular terrain/rocks and through water surrounded by pristine Amazon Rainforest. The weather can be hot and humid which makes this a very refreshing activity! The highest waterfall to climb is 16 feet and the rest are smaller. You'll use helmets and ropes and optional harnesses are available for people that want to use them.

Biking Distance - 2 miles
Elevation Gain - 500 feet
Minimum Elevation while Canyoning - 2,000 feet

What is the trekking like?

This adventure has a moderate level of trekking. The trekking trail is on dirt, sand, and gravel and located in the Paramo Ecosystem at high elevation.
Trekking Time - 5 hours
Trekking Distance - 7.5 miles
Elevation Gain - 2,500 feet
Minimum Elevation while trekking - 10,000 feet
Maximum Elevation while trekking - 11,470 feet

The Ministry of Tourism of Ecuador has issued a new law regarding all visitors to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands, an Ecuador Health Insurance Requirement is compulsory for the length of stay in the country. This is compulsory for all foreigners entering Ecuador as tourists.

Should I purchase travel insurance? If so, do you have a recommended provider?

Travel insurance is required for this adventure. It allows you to seek reimbursement if you are forced to cancel your trip for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to cover medical help, emergency transport, and/or theft or accidental damage while traveling. Are there special requirements for entry into the destination I am visiting?

We recommend you visit the local government websites where you plan to travel and review the required documentation for entry, current restrictions, and general recommendations for travel within the area. We encourage you to also visit your home country's embassy website if you are traveling to a foreign country. Requirements can change rapidly. Please be sure you stay abreast of the requirements and restrictions for anywhere you plan to visit. You can also enroll in the U.S. government’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and you will be sent updates if the situation in your destination changes. *Please note, when choosing a new date, you must choose a date within the same travel season in 2023 or 2024 to avoid any additional trip costs. If you select a new adventure, you will be responsible for the difference of any additional trip costs above the value of your current trip.

You may postpone your trip up to 30 days prior to departure with no fees or penalties.
You will have the option to:

2) If you choose not to reschedule your trip you will have the option to cancel, but standard cancellation fees will apply.

In some cases, you may have the option to postpone your trip within 30 days prior to departure.
If this is available at the time of your request, you will have the option to:
1) Select a new travel date within one year of your original departure date. Additional trip costs may apply and new dates are subject to availability, or
