-
Is this trip legal?
-
Yes. On June 5th, 2019 the U.S. released new regulations concerning travel to Cuba. Many categories were restricted or reduced, and the People to People exception category was essentially eliminated. The primary directive of the new regulations was to ensure legitimate engagement in a full-time schedule of activities that enhance contact with the Cuban people, support civil society in Cuba, and result in meaningful interactions with individuals in Cuba. This trip has been hand-designed to completely and directly comply with the amended OFAC general license 31 CFR § 515.574, “Support for the Cuban People.” All KB Cuba trips comply with all three parts of this new requirement. Further documentation can be provided upon request.
-
Do I need a special visa or documentation?
-
Cuba does not require anything special or different from U.S. travelers. All visitors to Cuba do need a tourist card, which generally is automatically given to everyone, and the airline that brings you to Cuba is responsible for selling you the card. This is usually done at the airport counter check-in on the day of your flight. The cost is around $50, but each airline charges a different markup. You'll also need a regular U.S. passport at least six months from its expiration date.
-
What is the best way to get to the trip start location?
-
Plan to fly into Jose Marti International Airport, where you'll be met by a tour representative. Many U.S. airlines fly direct into Havana.
-
How do I book airfare to Cuba?
-
You can book flights to Cuba through most major airlines. When you select your flight, you'll just need to confirm that you are traveling under the "Support for the Cuban People" category.
-
Can I add additional days to my departure?
-
Travel to Cuba is only authorized under one of the 12 categories outlined by the OFAC and it's exceedingly difficult to get permission to arrive early or stay beyond your departure. It is possible to extend your trip but you must apply for an authorized visa through the OFAC in advance and have an authorized reason for staying outside of your trip dates.
-
What are the accommodations like?
-
During your time in Cuba you'll be staying in homestays with local Cubans. These are very similar to hostels and include private rooms with private bathroom, and usually in a separate part of the home. The homes themselves are renovated, clean, and comfortable and often spectacular architecture. You only have to interact and be around the families if you wish and many travelers say the homestay is one of their favorite parts of the trip.
-
Can solo travelers get their own room? Is there a single supplement fee?
-
Yes, if you would like a private room for six nights, a single supplement is available for $150. Otherwise, you'll share a room with one other person - two beds or one bed, your choice.
-
How large is each travel group?
-
Each group has a maximum of eight people with an average of five or six.
-
What meals are included? What is the food like?
-
Breakfasts are included every day, and feature fresh fruits and juice, coffee and tea, bread and butter, and usually eggs prepared to your request. Lunches and dinners are not included in the cost, which gives you a wider choice of options and better quality of meals. Lunches generally are eaten together at the same restaurant, due to logistics. For dinner, your guide will go to their favorite restaurant each night and you are welcome to join or go off on your own if you prefer (with recommendations provided by your guide).
-
How much extra money should people budget?
-
Approximately $15 for lunch and $20 for dinner will buy you a top quality meal, with a beverage and tip included. One could eat for about half of that price at cheaper places with no beer or wine included. Drinks, beer, and wine aren’t very cheap and more similar to U.S. prices and will significantly increase your costs. Be realistic about how much you might drink during the whole trip, and budget accordingly. If you plan to purchase souvenirs like cigar and rum, a couple hundred dollars is an average budget. Without purchasing souvenirs or alcohol, you could easily budget $300 total for the week, but bringing $500 or $600 extra is more common.
-
What should people bring? Do you have a packing list?
-
A full packing list will be provided upon booking.
-
Should I purchase travel insurance? If so, do you have a recommended provider?
-
We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement if you are forced to cancel your trip for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to cover medical help, emergency transport, and/or theft or accidental damage while traveling.
Due to U.S. regulations, many travel insurance companies do not cover travel to Cuba. Your chosen airline may offer flight/trip protection and your health insurance may also offer coverage for your trip. Check with your provider for details.
-
Are there special requirements for entry into the destination I am visiting?
-
We recommend you visit the local government websites where you plan to travel and review the required documentation for entry, current restrictions, and general recommendations for travel within the area. We encourage you to also visit your home country's embassy website if you are traveling to a foreign country. Requirements can change rapidly. Please be sure you stay abreast of the requirements and restrictions for anywhere you plan to visit. You can also enroll in the U.S. government’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and you will be sent updates if the situation in your destination changes. You can find the program link at https://step.state.gov/.
