-
What is the food like? Are meals included?
-
Breakfast is included each day, and lunches and dinners are at your own expense. Long overlooked due to the famed cuisine of its European neighbors, the culinary scene in Portugal is now becoming more internationally recognized. Portuguese food is Mediterranean cuisine at its best, and like the people, it's warm, vibrant, and spicy. It's also balanced, as the Portuguese diet is filled with fruits, vegetables, fresh seafood, meat, and plenty of sweets. Popular dishes include Caldo Verde, a simple soup of onions, potatoes and kale, cooked with garlic and olive oil, and, of course, a great variety of seafood, such as bacalhau a bras (codfish), which is more than simply a traditional dish, it is a national obsession. The dish even has its own nickname, “the faithful friend.”
-
How much extra money should people budget?
-
You can eat like a king for $15 per lunch or $20 per dinner including beverages and tip. $40 per day (or about $250 for the week) should cover food and snacks. You might want to bring twice that amount to cover all food and incidentals. If you drink alcohol or plan to buy souvenirs for family and friends, you should budget more according to your preference. Keep in mind that alcohol tends to be the thing that most significantly adds up over the week. Prices for drinks are roughly the same as they are in the U.S.
-
What should people bring? Do you have a packing list?
-
Portugal has a Mediterranean climate similar to Southern California and is typically warm and sunny. A full recommended packing list, updated to include the necessary clothing for the various outings, is sent upon booking your trip.
-
Can I come early or stay later? Are you able to help with advice or activities if I do?
-
Yes, many people come for more time and visit Porto or the southern coast, or even other countries. Your local guides can give you some basic advice and recommendations, though detailed trip planning and assistance outside of this trip is a bit out of their scope. However, we are always willing to try and help any way we can!
-
Should I purchase travel insurance? If so, do you have a recommended provider?
-
We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance for all trips. Travel insurance allows you to seek reimbursement if you are forced to cancel your trip for unforeseeable reasons, or if you need to cover medical help, emergency transport, and/or theft or accidental damage while traveling. We recommend VisitorsCoverage as a provider.
-
Are there special requirements for entry into the destination I am visiting?
-
We recommend you visit the local government websites where you plan to travel and review the required documentation for entry, current restrictions, and general recommendations for travel within the area. We encourage you to also visit your home country's embassy website if you are traveling to a foreign country. Requirements can change rapidly. Please be sure you stay abreast of the requirements and restrictions for anywhere you plan to visit. You can also enroll in the U.S. government’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) and you will be sent updates if the situation in your destination changes. You can find the program link at https://step.state.gov/.
